Associate Professor Geoff Ramin

Geoff is Director of Emergency Medicine for the John Flynn Hospital. Up until March 2010 he was the Network Director of Emergency Medicine for The Tweed and Murwillumbah District Hospitals. He is a VMO in Intensive Care at the Tweed Hospital. He has extensive experience in pre-hospital care and medical retrieval. He is the Senior Specialist - Aeormedical and Critical Care Services for the Royal Flying Doctor Service in the Queensland sector. He is a Regional Consultant for the Queensland Ambulance Service and a Medical Consultant to Mondial Assistance. He is the Medical Director of International Medical Systems. His passion for adventures includes mountaineering, scuba diving, hiking in the wilderness and generally getting lost. He recently returned from summiting Mont Blanc the highest peak in Western Europe.

Dr Brett Gerrard

Brett is an Australasian trained Emergency Physician currently working in South Auckland, New Zealand. His career has taken him to such austere environments as Southern France, the English Riviera, the Sydney Olympics, Whakapapa skifield, the atolls of Northern Tahiti and Dunedin before completing his fellowship in Hyperbaric Medicine in Perth, Western Australia. He has continued a strong interest in Dive Medicine and has organised and accompanied several dive expeditions as onboard doctor. He continues to act as medical advisor to several dive expedition companies.

He is currently completing a Masters in Clinical Education, has a strong interest in teaching both students and physicians and continues to honour the ancient proverb that “Every man is allowed to be a fool for at least five minutes every day; the true wisdom of learning lies in not exceeding that limit.”. Presenting a lecture wearing board shorts will likely be the zenith of his teaching career.

His other interests include climbing, tramping and camping, viticulture, wildlife photography and generally exploring the world.

Dr Andrew Brainard

Andrew is currently an Emergency Physician at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland. He has extensive experience and training in emergency, wilderness and pre-hospital medicine. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine and a current Wilderness Medical Associates instructor. He has published and presented extensively on a range of wilderness medicine topics. Andrew has a rich and varied background with experience as a ski patroller, flight paramedic, firefighter and public health consultant forming just a small part of his career to date. His recreational interests include travel, sailing, skiing, climbing and backpacking.

Dr Chip Gresham

Dr. Chip Gresham is a US trained emergency medicine physician and a medical toxicologist working at Middlemore hospital in Auckland New Zealand where he serves as the co-director of education for the department of emergency medicine. He completed his emergency medicine training at the University of Massachusetts followed by a 2 year medical toxicology/toxinolgy fellowship at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Centre in Phoenix, Arizona. While his bench research is in organophosphate poisoning and toxicity, focusing on new antidotes, it is his love and expertise of toxinology and environmental medicine that has allowed him to travel and teach around the world. When not at work, Chip can be found somewhere outdoors, pursuing his passions which include rock climbing, ice climbing, exploring places he has not been yet and suffering from an incurable case of wanderlust.

Dr Paul Fischer

Dr Joe Alcock

Joe is the Chief of the Emergency Medicince Service at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He has a decade’s experience as the co-director of the Wilderness Medicine program at the University of New Mexico and is co-director of Mountain and Marine Medicine, LLC, which has hosted high altitude and diving medicine conferences on 4 continents. Joe’s other main interest is teaching Evolutionary Medicine, a topic that weaves evolutionary biology with biomedicine (and wilderness medicine) at the University of New Mexico. Teaching, exploring, and diving in some of the most endangered habitats in the world has also made Joe an advocate for preserving biodiversity and wild landscapes.
