Case Studies in Critical Care and Wilderness Medicine - Essential Information

HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE ?

In order to do this walk you need to leave behind the hotels and lodges in the south of the park and head into the wilderness areas of the north.

Whilst you have to sacrifice some creature comforts, the guides, porters and organised campsites make it comfortable and civilised.

Walks are generally between four and five hours each day although on one day you can be walking for up to eight hours. This walk is suitable for anyone who enjoys good Alpine walking.

There are six consecutive days of hiking, some strenuous over varied terrain including snow, rivers, glacial end moraine and muddy slopes.  You must be used to hill walking to enjoy this holiday. Some distances are long but the porters will carry all but your daypacks.

You mostly stay in tents at organised campsites with facilities. They are not luxurious but they do allow you to shower each day and to enjoy a hot meal and glass of wine at night.

On the first night you sleep at a wild campsite with no formal facilities, although hot food is still provided. You have a team of porters carrying your overnight things from campsite to campsite so that you can walk with just a daypack. Porters pitch the tents for you each evening.

The guides are experts in this area, and the Park in particular. They therefore know how to pace the walk, when to sit tight and wait for weather to clear and when to head out.

The highest part of the route is around 1,300m. Most of it is just above sea level.

HOW COLD IS IT ?

Summer daytime temperatures are usually comfortably in the mid-teens Celsius. However, the weather can be unpredictable and rain, sleet or snow can occur even in summer. There’s an average of 16 hours daylight in the summer months so the pace can be relaxed and you will have more than enough time to complete each day's walk.

PUERTO NATALES HOTEL

In Puerto Natales we will stay at Indigo, a beautiful boutique hotel located in one of the most spectacular locations on earth. Sitting on the waterfront you will be able to view the Fjord of Ultima Espernza all around you. Comfortable rooms, awesome food and, just in case you are feeling like being pampered prior to the trek, a Spa that takes in the magnificent views will all contribute to making this an awesome venue. At this stage we anticipate that we may actually fill the whole hotel exclusively with MOTE delegates.

Check out the hotel website for more details:
